The Internet as we currently enjoy it is a leading driver of U.S. economic growth and global competitiveness. Unfortunately, Congress is currently considering legislation that has been framed by its supporters as vehicle to protect US copyrights and trademarks from foreign “rogue” websites. While we support this concept, the current legislation put lawful U.S. Internet and technology companies at great risk by creating new liabilities, vague new technology mandates, and vast legal and regulatory uncertainty. It would impose new costs on small businesses and innovators at time when they can least afford it, and create a new and unprecedented private right of action regime for intellectual property.
Our goal is simple. We want to work with Congress to ensure that any legislation keeps the true spirit of the Internet at heart and protects American jobs, American economic prosperity, and the spirit of American innovation.
